This year would’ve been much different without the sounds and generosity of Shimon Hoshino softly playing in my orbit. From Japan he graciously brings us, as he puts it on his YouTube page, “A quiet touch of art, every single day.” His page is dedicated to exploring “the invisible design of sound and fragrance.”
I don’t remember when I discovered his work but its presence hasn’t left me since. He has naturally become the backdrop for my daily poems and has found his way to our poetry workshops here in Knoxville, Tennessee.
I find it comforting that I can bring him with me anytime and the feeling is consistent. His work brings a peace to my environment and my busy mind is able to settle. I had a thought earlier today as I try to bring silence into my life in curious and playful ways, especially when there isn’t silence. This is subject matter our POET collective has recently been exploring.
Shimon manages to silence the noise of the world, giving me a freedom, giving me room in myself so I can explore my own work as an artist. Which says a lot about him, and the energy in these daily offerings. His dedication to “Artist” as an identity is unquestionable. For me, thats what he embodies. An individual providing for the collective consciousness. It’s beautiful and I truly believe my own work has benefited from being supported by his sound.
In his own words, “I interpret colors and shapes through fragrance notes, then shape them into sketches and sound.”
Existence is impermanent and eventually we will not be so fortunate to have Shimon Hoshino donating his efforts to the daily heap of consumption. As a remedy to the chaos, as a remedy to the global illness of materialism and excessiveness, as a remedy to the moment you can’t stop the looping thoughts.
I am grateful for this work. Proud to share it with the world as best I can. Shimon Hoshino, thank you for what you do. Thank you for inspiring. Thank you for exploring the depths of yourself and being willing to share it with the world. Thank you for the access. Thank you for sacrificing your mental and physical energy for us.
I wish you kind pathways and the eyes and ears of expansion. Sending love and kindness!
Thank you!
Here’s the link to his YouTube. I highly recommend it. Shimon Hoshino
